Taking Better Pictures #1

Taking good pictures takes a bit of practice [some luck doesnt hurt]. There's a certain skill in taking good pictures. The most important thing about taking better pictures is to practice things that will allow you to take better pictures. The items below are a few important tips (some obvious, some not) to get you from being someone that takes pictures that bore people to tears to someone that takes enjoyable photographs.

Nikon D200 Review, February 2006, Phil Askey

The Nikon D200 was announced on 1st November 2005, some three and a half years since Nikon revealed their first prosumer digital SLR, the D100. It's fair to say however that the D200 is a completely different beast altogether, it shares far more with its 'bigger brother' the the D2X than its earlier namesake. The D200 has the robust build quality of the D2X, a 10.2 million pixel CCD sensor and a compact design more like the D100. Just as the D100 the D200 has a CCD sensor, unlike the D2X which utilized a CMOS sensor. It's clear that this camera is aimed at the same kind of market as the recently announced Canon EOS 5D. From a features, control and performance point of view the D200 is closer to the D2X than any other model.

Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel

Review based on a production Canon EOS 300D

On 20th August 2003 Canon surprised many people (not least us) when it announced its $899 / €1,099 EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). This digital SLR based on the EOS 10D's superb six megapixel CMOS sensor and image processor in an inexpensive consumer body similar to the film EOS-300. This camera is designed to take the prosumer end of the digital camera market by storm, everyone is fully aware of the image quality of the EOS 10D (considered by many as the benchmark six megapixel digital SLR), and so a consumer priced digital SLR based on the same sensor is irrefutably attractive to anyone who would have previously considered an 'all in one' prosumer digital cameras.

An Introduction to Photography: Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Taking Great Pictures

Photography is basically pretty simple if you understand how film and your camera "see", and if you understand how to see what your eyes see instead of seeing what your mind "sees".

This introduction is intended for beginners and hobbyists. But it is theoretically fairly complete, and can also be extremely helpful to those who have taken a photography course or who have been doing photography on their own, but who feel they "don't really understand what they are doing" or don't understand why some pictures turn out well and others turn out poorly -- people who genuinely feel that when they get a good picture it was more because of luck than skill.

On one of my rare visit to this news group I noted a posting that expressed dismay in the lack of informative articles to be found and suggested that if anyone felt motivated to post a few more expansive articles it may be appreciated. Having been a professional photographerf or the past 10 years I tend to avoid this group, as it's often the forum for beginners problems etc., which is fair enough. But as I said, I still visit rec.photo from time to time to answer a question or seek out a pearl of wisdom from a posting. So in the spirit of global communication, after all that's what the networks all about, I would be happy to post a series of articles on photography that I compiled a few years ago for an introductory photographic course at the local technical college. So please forgive me if they are a little out of date or not advanced enough for some, they were intended for people who were just starting to get into photography. I know that I would appreciate similar articles being posted in other groups, I read, where I consider myself a rank beginner and am often reluctant to post questions that would appear too simple. Anyway enough of the prattle here is the first of the series, let me know if this proves useful and I will post the rest over the next few weeks.

Should You Capture Digital Photos In Raw or JPEG?

RAW or JPG for Digital Photo Capture?

There is so much misinformation about RAW and JPG that even many professional photographers and graphics designers are confused. I won't name names, but there are several so-called "experts" who spout misinformation on the web and at seminars, and they are sponsored by brand name companies.

I'm a full time professional photographer. I work with JPG files every day. I never shoot Raw for my day-to-day work. That does not mean everyone should work just like me, but you should know some facts and forget the fiction.

A Beginner's Guide to Darkroom Equipment

by J A Ollinger

A darkroom is just that--a light-tight area where film can be handled without being exposed to light. It can be as large as a suite of rooms, or as small as changing bag.

For a hobbyist it's usually a converted bathroom, basement, closet, or an add-on room. There are a number of books on building home darkrooms, from spartan, temporary work areas to big, permanent setups. A good library or bookstore ought to have them.

What do you put inside your darkroom once it's built? Read on.

The Advantage Of Developing Your Own Black and White Photos, And How to Get Started

By Mason Resnick

Minilabs have taken the fun (if there ever was any) out of color printing. If you only shoot in color, it may make more sense to find a reliable lab and let them do the hard work. But Black-and-white is a different story. Black and white, because of its relative ease of processing, is easier to control; as a result, many darkroom enthusiasts are able to make interpretive prints that say more than any machine print can say.

The 10 steps to setting up a home darkroom

by Chris Groenhout

Plan distinct "wet" and "dry" areas. Chemical contamination of unexposed paper and splashes from the print washer reaching your main electricity can be not only frustrating but also dangerous.

In this age of high quality digital scanning and output, it seems that the days of the chemical darkroom are over. I’ll admit, it’s been five years since I shot a black-and-white roll of film for a client. There’s no demand anymore. Yet now, more than ever, the traditional darkroom has found its niche as a sanctuary for the true photographic artist. Nothing can replace the excitement of watching your first print appear in the developer tray, or the control supplied by your choice of developer, dilution, and time spent processing film. And, while digital methods (even cameras) can approximate a black-and-white photograph (and offer some definite advantages in terms of retouching and tonal control), there's no substitute for the intangible, subtle quality provided by a conventional silver gelatin black-and-white print.

Macro Photography

Taking close-up pictures of small things is called "macro photography." I have no idea why. Perhaps because the small things in macro photography are generally larger than the things you are taking pictures of when doing "micro photography". If you really want to be pedantic then you should say you are doing "photomacrography".
